PM Modi will not go to America, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will address the UNGA General Assembly
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not be present from India at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). In his place, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will represent India and address the General Assembly on September 27.
The 80th session of the UNGA will begin on September 9. While high-level meetings will be held from September 23 to 29. According to the revised list, Brazil will deliver the first speech and then the United States will address the General Assembly.
US President Donald Trump will deliver the speech on September 23. While Jaishankar will address the UNGA on September 27 from India.
Importantly, Prime Minister Modi's name was included in the initial list released in early July. He was supposed to deliver the speech on September 26. But after the changes in the new list, now the name of the Foreign Minister has been added in his place. According to sources, this list is not yet final and there may be more changes in it in the coming days.
There is a lot of speculation about the recent relations between India and the US. In such a time, the absence of the Prime Minister and his representation by the Foreign Minister is considered important. Analysts say that Jaishankar's speech may mainly include issues of global security, economic cooperation, climate change and counter-terrorism.
Leaders of many countries will attend this session of the UNGA and discuss global issues. After the speeches of Brazil and America, the heads of other countries will present their views on the global agenda. This forum can prove to be an important opportunity for India to present its foreign policy priorities.
